For all of you new hubbers hoping to write a HubNugget to call your own, I've been writing a weekly Nuggets Of Wisdom segment. By looking through the Wisdom posts, you can read all about how these Nugget writers of the past achieved HubNuggety greatness! Of course, if you're a little short on time, you could also read the ultimate Nugget Of Wisdom, written by our very own Shirley Anderson. She's a highly respected freelancer, and our HubNugget team leader, so she really knows her stuff!

In the meantime, as long as you're here, check out this interview with last week's top Nugget author. Kidgas wrote a timely and informative hub about heat exhaustion, and it's well worth the read. Make sure you leave a comment, to congratulate him on his success. Now here's what he had to say about the experience:

I came up with the idea for Heat Exhaustion Safety Tips after playing
a round of golf by myself in Orlando while the heat index was 110.
There was almost no one else on the course and I went a couple hours
without seeing anyone. I thought that if I passed out, nobody would
even know. It was somewhat stupid, but I love golf. I wrote and
published the hub two days later. I didn't even know that I was
nominated until later that weekend when I got home from vacation and
had internet access. Someone had sent a comment congratulating me. I
didn't know what a HubNugget was and had to look it up. Needless to
say, I was shocked that I was even noticed and quite honored.
I felt that I would have trouble promoting the Hub since I am not a
very outgoing person or very salesman-like. I figured I was in trouble
competing against much better writers who likely had more internet
experience and their own blogs. I did the only thing I knew to do for
promotion which was place a post and link on thefastlanetomillions.com
forum. I have been an active member of the community for almost 2
years and felt that if I had any credibility anywhere, that would be
the place. (I actually learned of HubPages at that site while
searching for information on Squidoo which doesn't compare at all).
Needless to say, my friends at that forum came through. There were
over 500 views of my post there and many votes.
I can't say enough positive things about my experience at HubPages.
The interface for publishing is easy to work with; the community of
Hubbers is incredibly cordial; I was immediately able to get traffic
from fellow Hubbers and feedback which is a huge ego boost and quite
encouraging. Being involved in the HubNugget experience definitely
brought increased traffic especially for that particular hub. It is,
in fact, has the highest traffic (although by a slim margin) and
represents over 9% of my total views. The traffic has continued. It
is a very relevant topic especially with summer football, soccer, and
other summer practices coming up in August. I hope the information is
read by many people and might even help save someone from heat
exhaustion.

Hello! I have the new installment of Nugget Of Wisdom. If you don't already know, Nuggets Of Wisdom is my chance to interview one of the recent winners of the weekly HubNuggets poll. Sometimes it doesn't take much prompting to get them talking about their HubNugget experience, as was the case this week.

It seems that the HubNugget program inspires so much excitement in the participants, that my job just keeps getting easier each week. And that's what it's all about. Making things easy for m...I mean encouraging great new hubbers, and getting them excited to write even more!

DoodleLyn was eager to share her thoughts on her Nuggeting experience, and I'm happy to oblige! After you read her Nuggets Of Wisdom, head over to her winning hub and leave her a big ole congrats in the comment section!

I don't even remember how I stumbled upon HubPages, but I'm so glad I did. My hubby will attest to how much joy I get out of being in this community. He misses me! I'm always at the computer, either writing, checking for comments, or reading other's hubs. I've only been here a few weeks, but already feel so welcome. Most hubbers are very encouraging, and seem so willing to help out the "newbies."

What a surprise when I received my email to let me know my very first hub had been nominated to be a hub nugget. I quickly went to the link to learn more about what exactly that was. I feel honored to be chosen as one of the top five. Voting must have been very difficult, as all the hubs nominated were very well written. I guess in my excitement, I voted for myself (sorry other nominees, nothing personal), and didn't even remember doing so. I finally figured out how to direct my friends to vote for my hub the night before the deadline, and sent out a few emails. I also put a notice on my Facebook page. A few of them got their emails and did vote for my hub. A couple of people linked my hub on their Facebook and Twitter pages.

I got a few more fans from my hub nugget experience. When I first published my hub, I had some traffic and comments, but that died down a while after. I have received lots more traffic to my hub since my nomination. I hope to get more when it is announced in the newsletter.

I encourage all new hubbers to try it. I will definitely try again. Your hub can only be a hub nugget when you are a new hubber, so go for it while you can. I figure we can use all the help we can get promoting our hubs. Thanks to a terrific team at HubPages for your support, your encouragement, and for providing us a vehicle for our writing. I love it here at HubPages!

I had the honor of writing the HubNugget hub this week, and I have to tell ya, it was tough! It's a good thing there are a whole team of us digging for the weekly wannabes, because every time I look at the list, my head spins. Every week, the list of contenders gets longer, and the talent is incredible! It's tough to narrow it down to just 10 Wannabes, and even tougher for the voters to pick their favorite. Back In The Saddle, Again.

Technical difficulties and a hectic schedule have kept me offline for a while; but I'm back now, and will continue to bring you news from the HubNugget files.

First up, I received an email from a recent winner who was kind enough to share some thoughts on the HubNugget experience. RedElf was very excited about her win, and we always like to encourage HubNugget excitement; so here is her tale of multitasking, and the rewards of hubbing:

To say I really enjoyed being selected as a Hub Nugget Hopeful would be a gross understatement. I hate to sound like a gushy Academy Award hopeful, but I was truly was thrilled to have my writing acknowledged. As I was participating in the 30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge at the same time, I was too busy to hover over my score and check the voting every day, but I was tempted.
I am so pleased one of my hubs was chosen. It was amazing, as a relative newcomer, to receive that kind of exposure, and the response from the Hub community has been most gratifying. I certainly feel welcomed and appreciated. I must tell you, it was great to find such acceptance for doing something (writing) I have done all my life, but which has never been particularly valued or considered worthy. It was just something I did.

I was lucky enough to have a seasoned "hubber" as a mentor. She would explain how to accomplish what are now, with practice, some pretty basic things - it all seemed so new and "what-do-I-do-next?" just a couple of months ago. I owe her a lot and am so grateful for her patience and support.

I also found that not only did traffic increase because of the featured position of my "candidate" hub, but the Hub Nugget spotlight and the Challenge happily combined to drive up my AdSense exponentially. I must admit, though, that it is really all about the writing for me - that and the great community of like-minded souls I have found here on Hub pages.

Well said, Elf! The HubNugget team congratulates you on your win, and wishes you much hubbing success in the future! And I would like to send a personal thank you to the mystery hubber who introduced you to Hubpages!

Nuggets Of Wisdom

I was sitting in my bunker this morning, trying to put together some new interview questions for this week. I had barely put pen to paper, when there was a frantic knock at my door. Now I have no idea how they did it, but Hank and Naddy, of HeSaid SheSaid fame, had somehow found their way to my Hell, Michigan bunker, all the way from their favorite loveseat.

They were obviously excited,and talking a mile a minute. So I flipped on my recorder, and got every word of what would be the easiest interview I have ever done. In fact, I never asked a single question. I probably couldn't have gotten one in edgewise. Man, do these two have energy! I love it!

Here's what they had to say:

When Hank and I heard about the 30 hubs in 30 days from Frieda, we thought, "What fun, that it would be a good idea." It didn't take much coaxing. Hank and I had a few things we could share and write about; and between the two of us, it wouldn't be so hard. We seemed to hit it off pretty well and were relieved to have someone showing us the ropes a bit. We didn't expect much. We had a few dear fans with the same interests, all great writers.

And one day, I checked hubtivity and I saw a hubnuggets hub was just published and went in to check it out. (Frieda's won two, you know, so we were familiar with it.) I scrolled down to see what golden gems the team had in store for us this week. Low and behold, Top 10 Naddy's Favorite Things, which I wrote, was in there. I had to do a double take, I honestly did. I couldn't believe it! It was most exciting. I screamed with delight.

Once I gained controll of myself I went straight away to our hub and I advertised! Yes I did. I put in the picture, I put in a link, I explained about the nomination (a smidge at the top of the hub that told people to look to the bottom for more information, I made out a letter with links to our hub as well as to the Hubnugget hub (written out not hidden), and told people that if they like the hub, or laughed just a little, to go vote and to please copy the note and e-mail it to everyone they knew. Then I went and did the same on our profile page. I had Frieda twitter our hub and profile. I also had her facebook it. (Hank and I don't do either). And then I watched and made sure, as always, to answer comments as soon as possible.

I kept a close eye on the voting poll results. We stayed in the top three throughout. In the mean time, I wrote a few more hubs, and got quite a bit more fans. It was exciting! So much support came our way. Not to mention, people were introduced to the Hubnuggets contest from out advertising on our hub and profile. Who's to say which influenced which in the end, but we won and gained quite a few more readers; devoted ones at that, I might add.

Prior to being nominated into Hubnuggets, we had about 13 fans I think. Within that week we had shot up to around 36. And now we have 54. Excellent I'd say. And it wasn't all because of Top 10 Naddy's Favorite Things. People browsed beyond that to some recipes and other nosalgia pieces.

My advice to Hubnugget wannabes:

Advertise, and advertise clearly. Make sure people know where to go, what to do, simply, but clearly, with links written out for those who get your info somewhere down the line where the link doesn't work. Get friends, who people respect, to advertise for you as well.

Be visible. No sense in hiding at such a wonderful moment in your life. Go to other hubs and comment. Go the forums and comment. Let people get to know you. Answer comments you recieve on your hubs, letting your personality show through, not just a thanks. Get to know your fans. Check them out. Chances are you've got similar interests.

Write more hubs! Give the people that stumble upon you something else to read, more stuff to look forward to. It's the perfect opportunity to get yourself noticed, to stay in the limelight so to speak, and another great way to sell yourself. Let people know you're having fun, and that hubpages is a great community, by writing more hubs and contributing more of your pieces. Let them know you're an active member and others will get excited about you, about hubpages and hubnuggets too.

So glad to be a part of this wonderful community. Thanks to everyone for their support.

Boy, the Nugget winners were busy this week! It took some fancy maneuvering, but I was able to track one of them down and get a brief interview. Once she caught her breath, frogdropping was only too happy to help spread the Nugget love! If you haven't already seen it, go read frogdropping's hub, and congratulate her on a hub well written!

B.T.: Now that you've been around Hubpages for a while, what are your impressions of the community?

fd: I’ve been a member of HubPages around a month now but my impressions of the community are that it’s a bit like moving to a new town or area – and the neighbourhood is friendly. You know how it works: new people arrive, unsure what the local amenities are like, feeling a bit lost, uncertain of how or where they fit in. The new arrivals interact – ask for help and guidance, some even just stand up and shout ‘hey! I’m new here … hello!’ and hubbers respond. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from – or even what you you’ve come to HubPages for – the hubbers are a friendly group of people. I’d recommend anyone that reads this, that may be considering joining, to do just that.

B.T.: What did you think when you saw that your hub was in the running for genuine Nugget status?

fd: Truthfully? I thought that perhaps the Hub team were having little moment of madness! I mean – the hub that was chosen is about a Dragon – called Kevin. Hardly what I’d have expected to be seen in the running for a Hubnugget wannabe! I’d voted for Hubnuggets - previous to the week I was chosen. I hadn’t read anything quite as ridiculous as mine … . Initially – I thought it was a joke. When I realised it was genuine, I remember thinking “well … that just proves that writing’s very subjective. Individual tastes and all that’. In all, it was a lovely surprise.

B.T.: How did you promote your hub? Did you tell friends and family? Did you tweet it? Facebook it? Future Nuggeteers are dying to know!

fd: Hardly any. I don’t do Facebook, am notoriously useless with Twitter and my family isn’t aware that I write on HubPages. Then, a fellow Hubnugget wannabe – livewithrichard - read my chosen hub and left the following comment “My hub was nominated too this week but I voted for yours …” His comment made me decide that I’d rather become a Hubnugget due to internal voting. So – no mystery. No words of wisdom. No promotion. Sorry!

B.T.: Did you gain some new fans throughout the course of the voting, or after the newsletter arrived?

fd: I did gain some new fans that week but I truthfully don’t know if it was a direct consequence of being a Hubnugget or not. However – let’s face it, being a Hubnugget wannabe is a bit like being given free advertising. It was hardly going to be detrimental now, was it?! I’m pretty sure that some of those that joined my fan club did so due to the Hubnuggets exposure. In my opinion, being a wannabe can only be a positive!

B.T.: I've heard a couple of people say that the HubNugget contest is lame. How would you respond to that? Nicely, please. This is a family blog.

fd: First – having been a Hubnugget, I can say with honesty that the concept is far from lame. If there is anything that is lame about it, it’s the fact that many hubbers don’t participate. I’m unsure as to why. There’s simply thousands of hubbers on the site. I’m aware that there’s only a percentage that regularly interact around the site but it’s a lot more than a hundred or so. Hubnuggets is a great idea – and would work far better if more hubbers participated. It’s a leg-up for new hubbers. And that’s got to be a good thing.

You've got that right, frogdropping! We think that acknowledging and encouraging the talented newcomers is definitely a good thing. And the response from the winners, so far, has been overwhelmingly positive!

You must be anxious to get back to Kevin , so I'll jus shake your hand...uh...flipper, and congratulate you again! Now you had best be getting along. Kevin's looking pretty hungry. I sure hope he doesn't eat jackalopes!

Nuggets Of Wisdom

I had the opportunity to interview one of last week's HubNugget winners, today. Since I've been wondering what our latest crop of talented hubbers thinks about HubNuggets, I jumped at the chance to pick his brain. If you want to know how C. Ferreira wrote his way to Nugget stardom, just keep on reading! When you're done, swing on by his profile, congratulate him and read the hub that brought him sweet, sweet victory!

1- What brought you to hubpages?
I was just browsing the web looking for a way to make some money doing some form of freelance writing. I got to one website that had HubPages at the top of its list. The website had a lot of positive things to say about HubPages so I decided to check it out. I am so glad I did. Not only is it a great way to do some writing, it is one of the better social networking sites I have ever used!

2- How did it feel to learn that you had been nominated as a potential Nugget?
I couldn't believe it! I had seen the first newsletter and didn't really know what to make of it. I hadn't heard what a Nugget was, just that they were in the email. When I received the email informing me that I was a potential Nugget, I was pumped. I never expected it at all, but my first thought was, "Great! This will increase my readership some." I was very thankful to be chosen after only being on HubPages for a short while. What a good feeling!

3- What, if anything, did you do to promote your hub and get all those votes?
The first thing I did was get the link to the voting page and emailed my friends and family that I usually have read my Hubs. I got them all to cast their vote, and then I turned to Facebook. I posted the link to the voting page and simply said, "Go here, vote for mine...please!" I have no idea if it worked, because I stupidly did not set up a URL tracker. I also selected some of my closer aquaintences on Facebook and posted the link right to their wall asking them to vote for me. I know I got at least a few from that.

Naturally, the HubNugget got a lot of reads and comments. I simply commented back to let people know that I appreciated their checking out my Hub and I would appreciate their vote as well. I also posted in the forums, which is an apparent no-no, so I apologized for that and discontinued using the forum this way. I did however thank everyone and anyone who voted for my Hub.
Other than that, I just double checked with everyone I knew and made sure they had cast their vote!

4- One of the perks of being a HubNugget winner, is a little bit of link love in the weekly newsletter. Has the HubNugget exposure affected your traffic/ fan count?
My HubNugget has definitely increased my traffic. I saw an immediate increase in readership as soon as it was nominated. I got more comments, and my fan base gradually increased, and is still climbing! Having a Hub turn into a HubNugget does wonders for traffic.

5- You obviously know what it takes to achieve HubNugget status. What advice would you give to a new hubber, hoping to own a Nugget of their very own?
To a new Hubber, I would say to produce a quality Hub! You can't expect to just whip something up and expect to become a HubNugget. My HubNugget was a Hub written in response to a question asked by a fellow Hubber. It may be a good idea to try answering a question that other people would find useful and be interested in.

Be detailed and clear. A nice looking layout will also be beneficial. The easier it is for someone to read, the more appealing it becomes to the masses! Other than that...get lucky like me!

What's Going On At Hubpages?

If you haven't heard of hubpages.com, or the HubNugget program, you should definitely head on over, and have a look. I write for several online communities, and hubpages is far and away my favorite. I have found the writers and staff to be the friendliest and most supportive group of people around, and the HubNugget program is a shining example of this.

So what is a HubNugget? In short, it is hubpages way of saying "Nice Job!" If you have recently joined hubpages, and have written a quality hub (article), the HubNugget team will find it and showcase it in a weekly hub of their own. We include a link to your hub, and a poll for hubbers and non-hubbers alike to vote for their favorite.

Traditionally, 10 potential HubNuggets, or Wannabes, have been selected for the weekly poll, with the top 5 vote-getters being announced as winners. In recent weeks, however, an influx of truly talented newcomers has prompted us to widen the field to 15 wannabes!

The 5 winners are announced in the hubpages forums, and links to their hubs are published in the weekly newsletter. The newsletter reaches tens of thousands of readers, so the the prize, here, is an immediate increase in readership, and a growing fan base.
